Extending across the entirety of northern Asia and most of central Europe and covering more than one-eighth of the world’s inhabited land area, Russia is the world’s largest country by surface area. Officially known as the Russian Federation, Russia has a population of over 144 million people which makes it the 9th most populous country on the planet. With a total gross domestic product of 3.9 trillion Russia is the 12th largest by nominal GDP and 6th largest by purchasing power parity. Possessing the largest reserves of mineral and energy resources, it is the world’s leading producer of oil and natural gas.
Moscow, the capital of the country is the largest city in Russia. With a long cultural history, Russian culture has had a considerable influence in areas of art and politics. The cultural diversity of Russia is such that more than 160 different ethnic groups make a home in Russia. Among them, more than 100 different languages are spoken while the most widely spoken language is Russian, which is also the country’s official language.
Possessing a literacy rate of 98% which exceeds that of most western European countries, Russia has one of the best mass-education systems in the world. Apart from this, Russia is also home to a number of world-class tertiary education institutions.

Located in the city of Voronezh, it is one of the main universities in central Russia which consists of 18 faculties. It is also among the top 100 BRIC universities and offers undergraduate and post-graduate teaching programs which centre around nine different areas: physics and mathematics, radio-physics, electronics, natural sciences, geosciences, humanities and social sciences, educational theory and pedagogy, medicine and pharmaceuticals, economics and management.
